Benefits of Consistent Routines

One of the most important aspects of parenting is consistency. Although adults may feel that children would prefer to have new rules every day, children feel secure and safe when they know their routine, boundaries, and expectations (even if they give you some pushback!).

Children need to internalize, rehearse and repeat behaviors. This is best accomplished in a structured environment, such as daycare or preschool.

A relaxed or fluctuating schedule is not necessarily best for the child. That is why children who attend daycare or preschool can grow in so many areas at a time. In a daycare or preschool program, they adapt to a predictable schedule, anticipate parts of the day, build valuable relationships, and so much more:

  • Storytime
  • Music and movement
  • Arts and crafts
  • Imaginative play
  • Outdoor time
  • Preschool curriculum

Additionally, children who attend daycare or preschool transition to school much better than their peers who have stayed at home. Children who have no routine or schedule may have a very hard time transitioning to a structured school day. This may even impede their ability to make good grades and relationships at school!

On the other hand, children who are adjusted to a structure and routine are ready to make the transition to school. The school schedule feels familiar to them. They are able to adapt to new routines and build relationships faster, which can significantly improve their learning skills and educational experience.
